Before Cleaning Your Roof
7 important tips to for cleaning your roof
It is very important to clean your roof on a regular basis to keep it in great condition and to prevent damage of any kind. Here are some of the things you need to know before cleaning your roof. Remember to consult with a roofing contractor before getting started on any roof project.
Tip #1: Don’t walk on your roof
Before getting started with your roof cleaning project, make sure nobody walks on the roof. If you have to walk on the roof yourself to carry out the cleaning, make sure to walk on the roof only when necessary.
Tip #2: Safety first
Safety should be your biggest priority when you begin working on cleaning your roof. Consult with a roofing specialist about the best practices, precautions, and safety guidelines to follow. Wear skid-proof shoes, and put on a harness and pads.
Tip #3: Don’t wait for a leaky roof
Periodic roof cleaning allows you to get rid of algae and moss on the roof. Algae and moss grow
in moist environments, and are found on the roof when debris such as pine needles and leaves accumulates. Remove debris using a leaf blower or by sweeping the roof as gently as possible. There are many cleaning solutions available that get rid of algae or moss. It is better to hire a roofing professional to apply the cleaning solution, as it has to be done carefully in order to protect the granules in the roof shingles.
Tip #4: Don’t forget the gutters
Clean the gutter as thoroughly as possible. The gutter is meant to keep water away from the roof, but it can easily get clogged with debris such as leaves and sticks. When this happens, water starts collecting in the gutter. This adds to the weight of the gutter, and it starts bending and finally cracks because of the water damage. That’s why it is important to clear the gutter of debris or dirt on a regular basis – especially before it starts raining or snowing.
Tip #5: Check trees
If you have trees next to your home, make sure to trim any tree limbs hanging over the roof. Tree limbs usually sway a lot in windy conditions, and can scratch the roof surface and do considerable damage. Just make sure tree limbs are trimmed and that there are no twigs, leaves, or other debris on the surface of the roof.
Tip #6: Ladder safety
Use a ladder that is tall enough to allow you to step onto the roof without having to climb up. Never stand on the top rung of the ladder. It is not a stable position, at least not stable enough to support your weight.
Tip #7: If you’re unsure, hire a professional roofer
If you’re not sure that you can handle the job well, hire a reputable roofing company to handle your roof cleaning. Your roof is too important and expensive a part of your home to gamble with.
